A Day in Happily Ever After

Even fairy tales own an element of predictability. Cinderella and her prince commence each morning with "Once upon a time," only to meet the day's close with "And they lived happily ever after." While Brady and Stefanie's tale begins a bit differently, their routine maintains the magic of "happily ever after."

Each morning at five am the alarm clock rings, reminding Brady to kiss Stefanie's forehead and tell her that he loves her. Before long, Stefanie tiptoes into the kitchen to pack Brady's lunch - and to secretly slip a note next to his sandwich. Both are anticipating busy and fulfilling days, but before parting ways - Brady for PT and Stefanie for her morning run - they kneel together, hand in hand, in prayer. Brady petitions for Stefanie's protection, and for her success in school, as well as praying for guidance of his own.

While at work, Brady sharpens his aviation skills and battles challenges in logistics and planning. Meanwhile, back at home, Stefanie fights a few battles of her own - such as staking out the best pool chair to lay out in. After solving this logistical challenge of the day, she slips on her sunglasses and pulls out her copy of Plato's Phaedo, intent on finishing another lesson for Philosophy 110.

Around six o'clock, Stefanie hears the door unlock and Brady walks through the door. She peeks her head from around the stove and is greeted by the smiling lieutenant - who is slyly concealing a small bouquet behind his back. He is not sly enough, however, because Stefanie easily recognizes that scheming smile which always precedes florals. As Stefanie delightedly finds a vase for the flowers, Brady tries to (inconspicuously) stick a fork in the pan on top of the stove, double-checking the chicken for doneness. Satisfied with the opaque color, he carries the pan to the table and tells Stefanie what a wonderful cook she is and what a lucky man he feels that he is.

After dinner, Brady and Stefanie take a few moments to read the scriptures together, and to share their own personal feelings regarding the Savior and His Gospel. Brady then moves into the study to read Clausewitz and to update his leadership blog, and Stefanie stays in the living room to dabble in her own book and to spice up her resume a bit. Before long, she is briefly interrupted by Brady, who claims he can't find anything in the study since Stefanie reorganized it. She nods and listens empathetically, but can't help but think, But Sweetheart, it just looks so pretty now.

Early - to - bed-ers as they are, before ten o'clock Brady and Stefanie once again kneel beside one another in prayer. This time Stefanie thanks Heavenly Father for blessing her life with such a wonderful husband. She prays for his restful sleep so that he can rise and be alert and sharp tomorrow to meet all of his responsibilities. A final kiss goodnight (and another, on the cheek), end another day of living "happily ever after."
